Andy Warhol – Polaroids 1958 – 1987
Taschen
Andy Warhol was a tireless observer of life and its interactions. Always accompanied by a Polaroid camera, from the late 1950s until his death in 1987, he created a vast collection of snapshots capturing friends, lovers, patrons, celebrities, and strangers, as well as landscapes, fashion objects, and self-portraits. This book, produced in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation, presents more than 150 of these snapshots.
The portraits include celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Alfred Hitchcock, Jack Nicholson, Yves Saint Laurent, Pelé, and Debbie Harry, alongside scenes from Warhol's personal life, his luxurious lifestyle, and his landscapes, as well as still lifes of Cabbage Patch dolls and his iconic Campbell's Soup cans. These often simple and improvised Polaroids document Warhol's era in a similar way to how Instagram records ours today. They are an unparalleled testament to the life, world, and vision of the master of Pop Art and modernism.
In 1981, the BBC interviewed Andy Warhol, exploring his approach to photography, his methods, and his choice of subjects that shaped his work. From Salvador Dalí to Muhammad Ali, Blondie to Basquiat, Warhol captured friends, lovers, and objects with his signature Pop Art gaze. This video offers a unique window into his creative process, complementing the definitive collection of his Polaroids assembled in Andy Warhol: Polaroids 1958–1987 .
