My Cousin Aurelia's Dreams
Los sueños de mi prima Aurelia is one of the most extraordinary dramatic works by Federico García Lorca.
It is the last play the author wrote in 1936, before his assassination. For this reason, it is an unfinished work, of which one act and a loose poetic dialogue have been preserved. But there is something else that makes it unique: it is an autofiction in which a queer child named Federico García Lorca stirs “the own room” where his cousin Aurelia, a character based on his first cousin Aurelia González García, meets with her neighbors to read novels during the town’s carnival festivities.
Aurelia dreams of a love free from the yoke of patriarchy, while Federico expresses an uncontrollable desire that crosses the scene as a poetic and vital force.
This edition is based directly on the Lorca manuscript, contextualizes the text within the whole of his dramatic work, and includes two drawings by the painter Gregorio Prieto made from the piece. It also includes an introductory study on the last play written by García Lorca before his assassination.
