Tipos duros, by bell hooks, is a fundamental essay on the construction of masculinity within contemporary patriarchy. From the perspective of Black feminism, the author analyzes how the white supremacist capitalist patriarchy has imposed on men a mask of toughness and invulnerability that hides deep wounds.

What is often interpreted as strength is, in reality, armor against a system that limits their humanity and pushes them toward emotional alienation. Rigid gender expectations and lack of self-love, the result of generations of internalized oppression, make it difficult for many men to develop a full emotional and spiritual life.

bell hooks examines how, deprived of real power and healthy forms of affection, many men take refuge in models of masculinity based on dominance, emotional silence, and denial of vulnerability. This essay invites us to look beyond stereotypes to understand the pain that male identity can hide within oppressive racial and social structures.

With clarity and depth, Tipos duros issues an urgent call to question patriarchy as a necessary step toward collective healing. hooks proposes imagining an alternative masculinity based on love, emotional responsibility, and integrity. A key book for rethinking masculinity and understanding that social liberation also involves transforming men.

bell hooks

bell hooks was the pen name of Gloria Jean Watkins (Hopkinsville, Kentucky, United States, 1952–2021), writer, feminist, and cultural activist. She adopted the pseudonym in tribute to her maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks, and chose to always write it in lowercase to focus attention on the ideas rather than the author’s persona.

Her work is situated at the intersection of race, class, and gender, a perspective she helped establish within contemporary feminist thought. Throughout her career, she analyzed how these structures intertwine to produce and maintain systems of oppression in society.

She published more than forty books and numerous essays addressing topics such as feminism, masculinity, education, love, media, culture, and African American history. Her texts combine political reflection, cultural critique, and pedagogical thought, making her one of the most influential voices in contemporary feminism.

Among her best-known works are El deseo de cambiar and Enseñar comunidad, also published in Spain by Bellaterra Edicions.
